Why? Multiple CAD systems with proprietary data definitions and formats have complicated the exchange of precise design data. Even when design data is received in a preferred native CAD format, there may be non-feature-based, B-REP data embedded in the file from somewhere in the supply chain. The ability to make additional modifications and iterative designs to the model may be restricted due to constraints, history limitations, or workarounds done to the file over time.

As global trade and dynamic market conditions change the competitive landscape, it is clear that CAD interoperability has emerged as one of the most important challenges facing design and manufacturing industries. The need to share design data has significantly increased as companies must outsource several elements of the design and manufacturing supply chain.
